If you do not want the addresses from your import to become the preferred address in the Raiser's Edge for existing constituents (if perhaps they are partial or not as reliable), you can opt to leave the row for Preferred in the neutral state.
In the below graphic, the first box is checked/ticked, the second is neutral and the third is unchecked/unticked.
